In a heartfelt response to a personal tragedy, Callum Walker, the Director at WR Surveying, has taken a significant step towards improving emergency health responses in Derbyshire. After losing his father to a sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) in January 2023, Callum has been propelled by a desire to make a meaningful difference in his community’s ability to handle such emergencies.

Recognising the critical importance of timely interventions during cardiac emergencies, Callum successfully applied for a donated defibrillator from Defibshop. This life-saving device has now been installed at Mickleover Memorial Hall, a location chosen for its high foot traffic, ensuring maximum accessibility for the public.

The importance of such equipment cannot be overstated. Sudden cardiac arrest is an electrical issue where the heart unexpectedly stops beating, preventing blood from circulating to the brain and other vital organs. Immediate response with CPR and the use of a defibrillator can drastically increase the chances of survival, with each passing minute without treatment decreasing survival rates by 10%.

In his efforts, Callum is not only increasing the number of publicly accessible defibrillators but also raising awareness about the difference between a heart attack and cardiac arrest—a distinction he was unaware of until his father’s passing. While a heart attack is often a result of a blockage stopping blood flow to the heart, an SCA is due to an electrical malfunction causing the heart to stop.

The newly installed defibrillator at Mickleover Memorial Hall is now registered on the circuit as well as on GoodSAM, making it readily available in emergencies. This initiative is just the beginning of Callum’s commitment to equipping his community with the necessary tools to save lives. His determination to continue funding and raising awareness for more defibrillators shows his dedication to turning a personal loss into a communal gain.

Defibshop has expressed its support for Callum’s ongoing efforts, providing him with the necessary supplies and knowledge to expand this vital project. This collaboration highlights the power of community and corporate partnership in addressing critical health issues.

For those interested in supporting similar initiatives or learning more about obtaining a defibrillator for local communities, engaging with organisations like Defibshop can provide valuable information and resources. This story of community leadership and proactive health management serves as an inspiring reminder of how individual initiatives can lead to significant societal benefits.

Callum’s actions not only honour his father’s memory but also provide his community with the tools to prevent similar tragedies, making Derbyshire a safer place for everyone. As we move forward, it’s clear that through awareness, education, and accessibility to essential medical equipment, we can all contribute to saving lives and strengthening our communities.
